Women in Manx Politics: In the Chamber.

The Women in Manx Politics project explores the experiences of women in Manx politics from 1919, when women were first eligible to stand for election to the House of Keys, through to the present day.  Drawing on a series of qualitative interviews, combined and contextualised by focus groups and historical research,  we examine women’s experiences in making the decision to stand for election, on the campaign trail, and in the chamber.

This project depended upon Manx partners, one of which was University College Isle of Man, whose Dr Catriona Mackie was one of the three academics collaborating on the project. At the UCM Research Festival 2023, Catriona presented our findings focussed on the chamber itself, discussing the architecture of the chamber and parliamentary estate, the language used in the House of Keys (focussing on the Sexual Offences Bill 1987-1992), and changes in the tone of debates more widely.
